There are quite a good number of resources/organizations available that provide a free UNIX account,
a search for free UNIX account should bring up a good number.
Part A: Sign-up for a new account
Here is one site that you can get a free UNIX account from and to complete the set-up process.
1. Go to http://www.arbornet.org/index.php
Sign-up for a free UNIX account by following the steps outlined. After you sign-up for a free UNIX account, login into the UNIX Server using a SSH/telnet client as in part B.
Part B: Get a SSH Client, use an existing account
Download Putty (Putty is a free SSH client)
1. Go to htttp://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
2. Click on "Download PuTTy!"
3. Go to "A Windows installer for everything except PuTTYtel"
4. Install putty by clicking on the file "putty-0.60-installer.exe"
5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. (make sure you choose "create a
Desktop icon")
6. Click the "Putty" icon on your Desktop to open the “Putty Configuration window”.
7. Select Category : Session
8. Enter the following
a. Host Name (or IP address): m-net.arbornet.org Port: 22
b. Connection type: SSH
c. Saved Sessions: m-net.arbornet.org
d. Click Save.
e. Select “m-net.arbornet.org” in the “Saved Sessions” and click Load
f. Click “Open”
h. “PuTTY Security Alert” , Click “Yes”
i. login as: enter your username that you created in part A ( example : amcosys)
j. amcosys@m-net.arbornt.org’s password: enter your password that you created in
part A when you type here nothing is displayed, but
when you hit on your Enter key, your session will start.
k. At this point you should be in your home directory on the UNIX box.
l. Now you are good to work on the UNIX account.
m. Enter “help” to get help on the system.
